From a longish thread involving dime store anthropology, gender cheap stereotypes and other bad generalizations about men and women and submission and dominance. Mostly I like quoting the estimable Laura Goodwin:
I disagree. Where is the “dominance” in either a dog/dog or cat/cat relationship? They may play rough, but few females in nature get raped. I saw a female horse repel an unwanted suitor with fierce kicks. That’s no abberation, it’s the norm in nature. Female hyenas are bigger than the males, have balls just like them, and require submissive behavior from their male partners. Elephants live in families ruled by the females. What is the one male lion of a lion pride but a sex-toy and towel boy for the real hunters of the pride, the females? Kind of like if I were to allow you to hang around with me and my lady friends until a hunkier male proved more interesting.
As for exceptions, the male seahorse is an exception: The female leaves her eggs with him, and he bears the offspring in her absence. As for using weapons, either sex can play that game. They don’t call guns equalizers for nothing.
My personal feeling is males sometimes overreact against female power. Woman is authorized by nature to dominate other humans and play a leadership role. One word: motherhood. A woman in power is nature’s default. If a mother abuses her power she may produce sons and daughters who develop a feeling of repugnance for the idea of a woman in charge. I certainly have seen ample evidence of this, just as I’ve seen the adult children of abusive fathers reacting against the whole idea of male rule.
It’s not your sex that makes you fit or unfit for responsibility over other human lives. People who are capable and compassionate dominants can be of either sex and any gender identity. That’s the way HUMANS are.
