… I have always been very controlling and restrictive with my son, set narrow limits for his activities, discouraged tendency to independence, checked on him, supervised him, guided him carefully in even the smallest things, never trusted him with responsibilities I had not first tested that he was completely competent to handle and never trusted him with much freedom.
He has always had earlier curfew and earlier bedtime than his sisters at the same age and he has to ask for permission before going anywhere and before doing most things. The early bedtime occasionally annoys him but in general he is content and seems to experience his very controlled and regulated life as pleasant and safe and he accepts as the perfectly natural thing it is that there are things his sisters can be allowed to do but that he cannot be allowed because he is a boy.
